HEWN
Hand tools on a timber workbench

Joinery · Stellenbosch · Est. 2009

Wood, worked until it belongs.

Kitchens, stairs, decks and built-ins for Cape homes. Designed in the studio, made in our workshop, fitted on site.

The workshop

A bench, a saw, and houses that ask for better timber.

HEWN is a small Stellenbosch joinery. We take on a handful of residential jobs each year — not because we like waiting lists, but because a kitchen or staircase should be made by the same people who measured the room.

Yellowwood, oak, ash and meranti. Traditional joints where they earn their keep. Hidden steel where a house needs it. No catalogue kitchens, no chipboard pretending otherwise.

What we make

Joinery that earns its place in the house.

01

Kitchens

Bespoke runs, islands and pantries. Drawers that close like they mean it. We design around how you cook, not a 600mm grid.

02

Stairs & rails

Open treads, closed strings, handrails that fit the hand. Structural when they need to be, quiet when they don’t.

03

Decks & outdoor timber

Pergolas, stoeps and screens built for Cape sun and winter wet. Oil, not a plastic film, so the wood can move.

04

Built-ins

Libraries, window seats, wardrobes and mudroom benches. The work that makes a room feel finished.

How a job runs

Measure twice. Cut once. Fit with care.

  1. Step 01

    Walk the house

We visit, measure, and talk through how the room is actually used. Photos and a tape. No mood-board theatre.

  2. Step 02

    Draw & quote

Simple drawings, timber choices, a fixed quote. You see the joints and the cost before anyone picks up a saw.

  3. Step 03

    Make in the shop

Most of the work happens here in Stellenbosch. You can come and see a carcass before it leaves the bench.

  4. Step 04

    Fit on site

We install it ourselves. Scribe to the wall, level to the floor, leave the house cleaner than we found it.

Craftsman working timber by hand in the workshop

The shop, Pniel Road

The studio

Four makers. One workshop. No middlemen.

HEWN was started by Pieter van Wyk after years on site as a carpenter. The shop sits just outside Stellenbosch — enough space for full kitchen runs, a spray booth, and a bench that has seen better decades and still holds a line.

We work with architects and homeowners. If you already have drawings, we build from them. If you don’t, we will sketch until the room makes sense.

“If it could be ordered from a warehouse, it is not a HEWN job.”

Clients

What they said after we left.

“The kitchen sits in the room as if the house had been waiting for it. Drawers, grain, the lot.”

N. Abrahams · Bantry Bay

“On time, on quote, and they swept up. The stair is the first thing guests touch.”

J. de Villiers · Stellenbosch

“They talked us out of a cheaper timber. Annoyed at the time. Grateful every summer since.”

M. Patel · Franschhoek
